Rational Oven Stuck in Cleaning Mode, Gwelup Aged Care Kitchen

A Bethanie Group kitchen in Gwelup had a Rational oven stuck in cleaning mode. It would not come out. Service was approaching and the oven was not available. The site had a spend limit in place and needed a same-day answer.

What Was Happening

Hard calcium buildup had jammed the oven's internal pump. The unit had locked into a cleaning cycle it could not complete, so it sat there, unavailable, while the kitchen waited. This is a Perth water problem. The mineral content here is hard on commercial ovens, and when descaling intervals slip even slightly, calcium can accumulate to the point where equipment stops mid-process. It is not a dramatic failure. The oven just stops doing its job.

How It Was Handled

The attending technician signed in, collected site access, and worked through the oven on the same visit. The pump assembly was accessed, the calcium blockage cleared, and the unit was reassembled and tested through a full cycle before the technician left. The pump returned to normal operation. A note was recorded that it did not feel entirely free when turned by hand, meaning this component warrants monitoring at the next scheduled visit. That observation went into the service record.

The Result

The oven came back online the same day. The operator received a documented service record including the fault cause, the work completed, and the forward flag on the pump condition. No guesswork at the next visit.

Why PEMS

The flagged observation about the pump is what separates a service record from a visit receipt. Bethanie's team now has a specific item to track, not a vague sense that something was attended to.

If your aged care kitchen equipment is on a maintenance program and you are unsure what is being flagged and followed up between visits, a service assessment is worth the conversation. Call PEMS on 08 7095 3550 or visit pemservices.com.au.
