A Perth aged care facility brought PEMS in for a scheduled annual gas appliance check across a busy production kitchen. With multiple gas appliances running daily meals for residents, the stakes for any operator are straightforward: appliances either pass, or they don't, and the findings go on record either way.
What Was Happening
The yearly check covered four appliances. The bratt pan was operating but the ignition system could not light the pilot due to restricted gas flow through the unit. A gas regulator replacement was required. One burner on the six-burner cooktop had a pilot that would not stay lit, traced to a thermocouple needing replacement. One deep fryer was cutting out at temperatures well above its set point, meaning it was running hotter than operators or the thermostat dial indicated. The second deep fryer was calibrated correctly, but its gas hose had developed a kink that posed a risk to continued safe operation.
How It Was Handled
Each appliance was inspected systematically and documented with findings and required actions. No fault was left as a note-to-self. Where an appliance could be confirmed operational, that was recorded. Where parts or follow-up work were required, those were clearly specified so the operator could act on them. A kinked gas hose does not wait for the next annual cycle.
The Result
The operator received a full written record of every appliance: what passed, what requires parts, and what needs follow-up before the next service. Nothing was left ambiguous. The kitchen team knew exactly where things stood.
Why PEMS
Annual checks only protect an operator if the findings are documented clearly enough to act on. A report that says "noisy" without a follow-up path is not a service record. It is a liability.
