A Cannington supermarket bakery had gone cold overnight. Not ideal when the morning's production run was already scheduled.
The bakery prover retarder, a piece of equipment that manages the proving and retarding cycle for bread production, had stopped heating and cooling. That means no product movement until it is fixed. For a high-volume bakery operation, that is not a minor inconvenience.
What Was Happening
The unit had a failed expansion valve and corroded copper pipework. The corrosion was not a sudden event. It had been building. By the time the fault presented, the system had lost its ability to regulate temperature in either direction. The bakery team had to hold production while the fault was diagnosed and parts sourced.
How It Was Handled
The attending technician waited for the bakery staff to complete their proving cycle before beginning work, avoiding any disruption to product already in process. The expansion valve was replaced and all corroded pipework was renewed. The refrigerant system was evacuated, recharged, and the unit was monitored through a full temperature recovery before the technician stood down. Nothing was signed off until the system was confirmed back at operating temperature.
The Result
The prover retarder was returned to full operation the same day. The operator received complete documentation covering the fault, the components replaced, and the verified recommission. The bakery production schedule resumed without further interruption.
